Quick summary: TellMe is a privacy-first app. We do not require you to create an account. We do not collect your name, email address, or any personally identifying information. Your location is used only on your device to detect nearby points of interest — it is never sent to our servers. We do not sell, share, or monetize your data in any way. The full policy below explains everything in detail.
This Privacy Policy explains how TellMe (“we,” “our,” or “the app”) handles information when you use our iOS application. We have written it in plain English because we believe you have a right to understand exactly what happens with your data — not just a right to be shown legal text.
If you have questions about anything in this policy, please contact us at jeff@foxcitiesconsulting.com.
TellMe requests access to your precise location while you are using the app and, optionally, while the app is running in the background. This is the core function of the app: detecting nearby points of interest as you drive and playing relevant audio narrations.
Your location data is processed entirely on your device. It is not transmitted to our servers, not stored in any database we control, and not shared with any third party for analytics, advertising, or any other purpose. When you close the app, no location history is retained by us.
You may select interest categories (for example: history, nature, local culture) that personalize which points of interest the app highlights. These preferences are stored locally on your device. If you choose to enable iCloud sync, your preferences are synced to your other Apple devices via Apple’s iCloud service using your personal Apple ID. We never have access to this data — it passes between your devices through Apple’s encrypted infrastructure only.
The app may store a local record of which points of interest you have heard, so it can avoid repeating content on the same route. This data lives only on your device. It is not transmitted to us.
Because we collect very little information, our use is equally limited.
We do not use any information to build advertising profiles, track you across apps or websites, or sell insights to third parties. We have no advertising business. We earn revenue only from app subscriptions and one-time purchases processed by Apple.
The app connects to a small number of external services to deliver its core features. None of these connections include personally identifying information about you.
We use Apple MapKit to retrieve map data and points of interest near your current location. Apple’s own privacy policy governs how Apple handles any data associated with MapKit requests. Your location coordinates may be sent to Apple’s servers as part of standard MapKit operation. For more information, see Apple’s Privacy Policy.
When the app retrieves descriptive content about a point of interest, it may query the Wikipedia API (en.wikipedia.org/api). These requests include only the name of the point of interest — no location coordinates, no user identifiers, and no personal data are included in the request. Wikipedia’s API is a public, free service.
When AI-generated narrations are enabled, the app may send a point of interest name and a brief Wikipedia summary to a server-side proxy we operate in order to generate a spoken narration. This request contains no personal information — no name, no location coordinates, no device identifiers. The generated narration text is cached so that the same request is not repeated. This feature operates independently of your identity and is not linked to you in any way.
All subscription and purchase transactions are handled entirely by Apple through the App Store. We do not receive or store your payment information. Apple’s App Store Terms of Service and Privacy Policy govern these transactions.
If you enable iCloud sync for your interest preferences, Apple’s iCloud service transfers that data between your devices. This data is encrypted and managed solely by Apple under their iCloud Terms and Privacy Policy. We have no access to it.
The data the app uses — your location while driving, your interest preferences, and your listening history — is stored locally on your device and protected by iOS’s built-in data protection. We do not operate a user database. There is no server-side record associated with you.
For the narration proxy service described in Section 4.3, we store only cached narration text keyed to a point-of-interest name. No user identifiers are stored alongside this cache. If our proxy service were compromised, there would be no user data to expose.
We retain essentially nothing. Because we do not collect personally identifying information and do not operate a user database, there is no personal data on our servers to retain or delete. Data stored locally on your device (preferences, listening history) remains there until you delete the app, clear app data, or restore your device.
Cached narration content on our proxy server is automatically expired after 30 days of inactivity and does not contain any personal information.
TellMe is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children. Because the app does not require account creation or any personal data submission, the practical risk is low — but if you believe a child has provided personal information to us in any way, please contact us at jeff@foxcitiesconsulting.com and we will take appropriate action.
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act, California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected about them, the right to delete personal information, and the right to opt out of the sale of personal information. Because we do not collect personal information and do not sell data, these rights are largely academic in the context of this app. If you have a specific CCPA request, please contact us at the address below and we will respond within 45 days.
If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have additional rights under the General Data Protection Regulation or UK GDPR, including the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, and data portability. Because the app does not transfer personal data to us, most of these rights apply to data held on your device (which you control directly) or data held by Apple (which is governed by Apple’s GDPR commitments).
If you have questions about your rights or a specific request, contact us at jeff@foxcitiesconsulting.com.
You can delete all locally stored app data at any time by deleting the app from your device. If you have iCloud sync enabled, you can manage or delete that data through your device’s iCloud settings.
TellMe does not use advertising identifiers, does not participate in cross-app tracking, and does not display third-party advertisements. If you are prompted by iOS to allow or deny tracking when you install the app, you may safely deny it — the app does not use tracking for any purpose.
We will never sell your data to data brokers, advertisers, or any other third party.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this document and post the revised policy at the URL below. For material changes, we will provide an in-app notice. Your continued use of the app after any change constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
